“Art and architecture fans from around the world fly in each year to walk through the imaginatively shaped and art-filled “habitable sculptures” on the property, which resemble the Hobbit houses in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films and the expressionistic organic style of Modernist Spanish architect Antonio Gaudí.”

Much is new at Ilan-Lael, the hand-built sculptural home, working-artist studios and gardens created by James and Anne Hubbell over the past 60 years near Santa Ysabel, California. James and Ilan-Lael artists and craftsmen (and women) have finished an amazing set of new buildings—the new Art Center— gathered around a courtyard, and these join the existing structures nestled amidst oaks and boulders like new members of the family.
Join us for an Open House Tour
Twice a year, Ilan-Lael typically has two Open House tours available for the general public: Father’s Day Open House and Autumn Open House. This year, instead of our traditional Father’s Day Open House and Tour, we are offering Special Spring 2021 Open House Tours, several small-group docent-led tours throughout May and June, 2021.
Walk the winding paths and gardens on your own, or with a guide, and explore the famous main house and separate “Boys’ House” where sunlight pours through stained glass. Greet founders James and Anne Hubbell, view and purchase his paintings, jewelry and sculptures on display, meet the Hubbell Studio artists, enjoy a nature hike, and live music, all surrounded in the beauty of our Laguna Mountains—whatever your pleasure, you will be inspired by the way nature and art can truly dance together as one. Admission fees go entirely to the non-profit Ilan-Lael Foundation, dedicated to preserving the property and its legacy of bringing art and nature events to the community. We hope to see you here during our next Open House!

Private docent-led group tours are available by reservation from March through November. Each tour lasts about an 1 1/2 hours with an additional 30 minutes for exploring the grounds.
